Michael Giacchino is the composer of over a hundred films including Up, The Batman, and Spider-Man: No Way Home who recently made his directorial debut with the Marvel Cinematic Universe special, Werewolf by Night (pictured above). His work with monsters, however, appears to be just beginning, as we have news that he’s set to direct a remake of the monster film, Them!, at Warner Bros.
According to Deadline, Giacchino is meeting with writers to pen the script and hopes to be in production sooner rather than later. “There’s always a movie in your mind that never leaves your head,” he told Deadline. “For me, that’s Them! It wasn’t until much later in life until I learned what it was about — the nuclear age.”
The first Them! came out in 1954 and was directed by Gordon Douglas. The black-and-white film kicks off when a nest of gigantic irradiated ants in New Mexico begin to wreak havoc across the U.S., and ultimately culminates in a battle in the concrete drain systems of Los Angeles. Giacchino teased that his remake will take the core of what the original is about, but with a modern perspective.
“What I love about Them! is exactly what it’s called: Them! It’s about the other, the unknown which one refuses or can’t understand,” he explained. “The current version of Them! is about immigration, and to tell a story about the subject through a lens of this insane science fiction monster movie.”
No news yet on when we’ll see Giacchino’s take on Them! terrorize the big screen, though we do also know that he’ll compose the score.
